Practical question: Why get a 3DS or Vita instead of a tablet?

I have a smartphone that I take everywhere (Droid 2 but I'm upgrading it to a Droid 4 in the near future) and a little case that houses my PSV and 3DS. Sometimes I just take one or the other, though.

I just don't get them.  What is the purpose?  They're just like giant smart phones but they can't make phone calls.  They're keyboardless laptops.  They are an abomination.  They're like a dog with wings but no legs.  Too dog to be a bird.  Too bird to be a dog.
