Cheap Smartphone games should be the main reason. It wasn't nearly as widespread during the DS/PSP generation as it is now.

But isn't smartphones wide spread in Japan as well?

Not sure, but they are well known for loving their portables. For instance, Super Mario 3D Land has already outsold Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 in Japan.

Also a very high percentage a Japanese spend a lot of time on the train. The average office worker in Tokyo spends two hours commuting to work, round trip. This gives them more time to play longer games and opens the doors up for more portable playtime.

sounds reasonable... I know I'd be gaming the whole way to work (which is like 15-20 min) if I had a 3DS!
