Trust me, you'll need it for any Diablo game . Having said that, the map on DII can be a bit intrusive, since it gets on the middle of the screen and can be a bit of a nuisance sometimes, even on Fade option, thankfully you can Tab it out whenever you want.

Do you mean a real life paper map? Why do you need it? My experience with Diablo is very limited but similar games like Titan Quest never had use for a map.
