It's called loss prevention. The current reality in big box stores that operate 24/7 is that loss prevention may not always be there and they may not be operating as a two-man team. In those circumstances, the responsibility of observant loss prevention falls on associates/team members, and then either get security involved or the local police. It sounds like the latter happened in this case.
