There's some other basic things like: - Never stop producing worker units All seamingly simple things but doing them perfectly all game long is very hard. |
Doing everything perfect takes a lot of time.
I know I always go for a quick gasless expansion and my minerals do go above 1000 in mid game but I still do ok. ( typically right after the second orbital is built I drop 2 mules and I can't keep up with my income because of supply blocks and too few barracks).
I don't scout either but sometime drops a scan. ( I'm not a the level where I can react to what the scout see so there isn't much point, I just go for standards counters, like I will build vikings against Protos around the 14 min mark because most likely they will have Colossus).
As long as you build a good economy and have defenses in place for early rush you will usually do ok
Right now I won most games because my base could defend an 8-9 minute rush and because I had better upgrades than all my terrans opponents due to my quick expansion ( it's amazing the number of terrans that do not research early stim ( could be because they have problem microing it so they forego it..)).
The games I lost was either because I was facing someone much better than me at macroing or made stupid decisions ( Protos probe dropped a pilon in my main and he 4 gated me because I was so in the terran mindset that I didn't realize the 1 second the probe was out of my sight was enough to build a building, I'm used to SCV taking forever to do that...)
Right now I'm working on getting better SCV saturation ( I'm usually at 36-40 when I should be close to 50 on 2 bases), and spending the money faster ( means being less supply blocked and building more units productions buildings around the 10-12 min mark and capping my army a lot faster).. Progress is slow as the less I forget to build drones, the more the income, the harder it is to spend it fast...
I want to get faster medivacs too so that I can do some timed drops of stimmed marines but I usually forget to build the starport right after the factory ( I wish you could see a widget showing what is currently being produced like in replays...)
I actually do better if there are early fights as those kill units and I'm decent at replacing them fast, especially when there is no supply issue due to some units dying...
I did practice a lot against the computer before going online.
If you can day in day out beat the AI on very hard in custom games, you will do fine in silver and gold league. The AI always goes for 1 base rush but it changes the kind of rush in each game so you get to see everyone that can be thrown at you. Right now I crush Terrans on very hard, I have serious problems against Protos ( I hate the void rays/zealots attacks and I hate when the Protoss transition from Colossus to high templar and storms the shit out of me...) and I crushed Zerg in the only very hard game I did despite a very poor bunker placement...
I'm going to start my platinum league games toonight and I expect to loose most of them but to learn a lot ( like I said I am surprised I was put there, I think my skills are more gold right now).
