I stopped using IE in 2001 or 2002 when a worm (Bugbear, if I remember correctly) luckily crashed before my very eyes, so I searched the net to know the risks I took and I discovered that although I selected the option to never memorize passwords and other sensible data, IE memorized them anyway in index.dat, and not even encrypted, only obfuscated (and it was also extremely difficult for a normal user to erase it).
So I switched to Mozilla and years after to Firefox. Now I surf the net almost only with FF on Linux (but I have a unified profile for FF and TB both for Windows and Linux, it was easier than I thought to do it).

I used Outlook Express another year, patching it regularly, and with strict settings for attachments, but abandoned it when I tried Mozilla's much more powerful filters.

Now I use IE only for MS Update and a pair of Active-X-only online antiviruses I use every now and then to double-check the resident antivirus' work.
