To me it's all about money, they haven't recouped their investment yet (and probably won't ever in the case of Sony). So they have to stay a few more years in the market to earn some more bucks.

Just because PS4 launches, it doesn't mean PS3 stops selling or being profitable.

A PS3 at $99 to $149 in late 2013 will still be selling in the millions per year and profitable. While I'm sure Sony expect 150m+ sales of PS3 originally, selling 80m over its lifetime and ensuring bluray's success still means its job is done.

Sacrificing future marketshare for the single item would be far worse than having an overall lifetime loss on one item.

I agree that if Microsoft releases something, Sony has to do it too immediately. They can't afford to lose market-share. Invert the names and it's true too.

But in my opinion, they won't do it just because Nintendo did it, because their systems are somewhat competitive with Wii U and less expensive. Anyway, that's just what I think, but to me even a reveal this year seems unlikely. Next year, for sure.

But see Nintendo started the roll out for both companies. Why? because they don't want to be third/last out. Even though fans like to think its a two horse race, MSony are very much in tune to what Nintendo is doing and will react to it aggressively.

When it was obvious Wii's motion controls and new casual focus was a major money maker, they copied the tactic in their own ways. For MS, it payed off really well.

It wouldn't matter who came out first with their next gen hardware announcement, the other two would then immediately ramp up production to be at most a year after as long as they felt confident the other company would also be around the same time. If MS comes out at E3 and says they'll launch this holiday too or by March 2013... expect PS4 in the same time frame and of course the opposite would be true.

As much as MSony don't want to let each other have much if any head start, they equally don't want Nintendo to have one more than necessary.
