Cancelling Microsoft Points doesn't further monetize Xbox LIVE. It would be a trading one system for another.
Also, Microsoft will never eliminate the Microsoft Point system. It may expand the ability to make "cash" transactions -- already available with Games on Demand -- however, it'll keep points cards because they work well as gift cards for gamers.
