By releasing digitially you eliminate used game sales, the rental market, and cut out retailers; and by keeping costs low you reduce/eliminate piracy and encourage buying games when they're new. |
It is not a simple solution, because on the top end titles, the market has shown people are willing to pay $60 a pop for a title, plus more for DLC, or even a season pass. There is differentiation in price going on now, but the makers of the consoles do NOT want too much differentiation. They want consumers to get used to paying what they do now, if not more. In addition, they want the sales front-loaded and with pre-sales to get as much profit as possible and pay off for the marketing. They are blockbuster driven, and people are used to it now, with midnight launch parties. Later on the price does drop to $20 or less. Heck, Rage is now down to $20 new.
Unless the videogame industry wants to stop wanting to be Hollywood, it won't happen.
