Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like everyone is arguing over whether the F35 will be the best aircraft for 1 on 1 dog-fighting; which I didn't think was the goal of the project ...
I thought the point was to have a versatile fighter which could be re-equipped to fill several different roles well; and to have this fighter used across as many allied forces to reduce the number of planes and the amount of equipment that needs to be supported in a joint force.
Realistically, the most likely scenarios for wars involving these planes is to patrol airspace that has already been controlled by the allies. Most likely the a bombardment from sea would cripple the opponents air force, specialized fighters would be used to eliminate all airborne opposition, and then the F35 would be used as a jack-of-all trades to control the airspace and support ground troops.
