Parents tend to do that.  First most parents called any video game system a Nintendo system up till around the PS1 era (I assume they used Atari up till the 80s crash).  Once Sony took over a lot of parents started calling all video game consoles Playstation.  They must be pretty confused right now on what to use as a common name considering the events of this generation.  I have a feeling that if Nintendo wins next gen then they might revert back to using just Nintendo.
