This was bound to happen. Israel refers to the West Bank as Samaria and Judea from Biblical times and if anyone bothers to read the documented historical record the Israeli Government released in the 90's, it was pretty obvious Israel's policy for decades was to annex the West Bank into Israel proper and if meant going to war for it then that's what they would do (such as in 1982 when they drove the PLO out of Northern Lebanon after the PLO 'threatened' Israel with diplomacy over the West Bank).

Obviously they couldn't just commit genocide or ethnic cleansing so had to bide their time and hope the Palestinians would pack up and leave rather than live under a brutal occupation. Unfortunately for Israel they didn't and I'm sure they regret not carrying out a full (as opposed to partial) ethnic cleansing of historical Palestine back in 1948 during the first Arab-Israeli war.

Most Israelis don't care too much for the West Bank so the Israeli Government heavily subsidies the living cost there and in goes the most ardent Zionists who believe they are doing God's work, on the front line and have a lot more children to populate the area than the average secular Israeli.
