They were never as good a enemy species as the Covenant, sure they had canon, but in gameplay they just didn't compare.

I do agree that the covenant are a better enemy but I think the flood filled the annoying enemy niche nicely (kinda like the drones). Remember the Cortana level on Halo 3? PLaying that solo on Legendary sucked.

Oh hell, that level... I cringed so hard during that on Legendary! They're quite the bastards in Halo: Wars as well.

But yeah, they do fill the role nicely I suppose.
