I'm not knowledgable about the efficiency in not cutting jobs in JP tbh. But it may be impacted by political pressure in JP as well. I do agree about the steps you mentions as that is exactly what I think will happen as well. Well maybe not the tv business, maybe some new partnerships to cut costs but I do not think a big venture of few companies combined will happen any time soon.

That is unless of course such discussions are well underway now.

It's not a question of efficiency, it is a legal question (at least for foreign companies). Many years ago, an airline company extended their flight schedule to Japan and needed to hire Japanese ground personnel. When it turned out to be unproftable they decided to kill the leg into Japan and fire the ground personnel. No way, they were legally bound to keep them on job until retiring age. (I don't know if or how they got out of the dilemma in the end).

Talks have indeed been going on about forming a Japanese TV group incorporating the major TV producers. Industry rumours say that one of the involved companies (not Sony) is currently unwilling to sign the deal.

oooh thanks for that info. I didn't know that bit about the legality of things. Very interesting. It can't be easy on investors in the country with laws like that.

Haven't heard of these rumors. I wonder if it's a smart thing to do. But then again given the current situation, it can't get any worse.
