The tv division needs some major changes and sony does need to come up with things to wow others, even if they are considered as gimicks by some. It will help them improve their brand image. sounds like Kaz understands this too. Best of luck to him

Kaz has 99% of the unsolvable problems Stringer had. From a practical standpoint, it is impossible to fire japanese people in japanese factories without financial suicide. Stringer basically shut down anything possible outside of Japan to save money. As a foreigner, he had zero chances to do anything within Japan. Now Hirai steps in, being Japanese, he still can't fire people inside Japan. Notice in his blurb, he weasels around by saying something like "people will be shifted around inside the company" - wishful thinking. What we will see in the next months is Sony people outside Japan getting fired, a few Japanese inside Japan getting relocated, and some getting paid to leave, and smaller Sony parts getting sold (chemicals?, batteries?). The best that culd happen is the entire TV division being merged with Hitachi/Panasonic into a new Japanese corporation with zero Sony involvement. Let the new company sort out the downsizing then. I wish Kaz good luck with that.

I'm not knowledgable about the efficiency in not cutting jobs in JP tbh. But it may be impacted by political pressure in JP as well. I do agree about the steps you mentions as that is exactly what I think will happen as well. Well maybe not the tv business, maybe some new partnerships to cut costs but I do not think a big venture of few companies combined will happen any time soon. That is unless ofcourse such discussions are well underway now. But I am certain they will not let go of the tv division completely no matter what. Another thing I think will happen is that the expendature on R&D will increase with the focus on things that may not in reality be of use for multitude of areas but still catch the attention of the consumers. This works. I REALLY hope they bring something additional other than the conventional ps/move combo for next gen. Not for myself but for the sake of the company.

All in all I think Kaz is making the right moves so far. I hope he keeps this up. It's a tough battle but if played smart can be a turning point for the company. Time will tell
