isn't this the same for Demon's Souls, where if it didn't find anyone near you when you are invading they drop you in an arena-like place where you're a boss yourself

That was only in the last stage of the Tower of Latria. You were able to invade in the last section of the level to become the boss in someone elses game. If you won, you got to keep the headwear which gave a big boost to magic.
