It launched at 399 $/€ and some reports said that Microsoft lost at least 125$ for each console sold.

If you want high-end specs and include the cost of the new Kinect (which they have to include if they want it to be something develops take into consideration and really use), you end with a console with a price tag of at least 499 $/€ with acceptable losses for Microsoft.

And the situation now (or in 2013) is not the same as before, 399 $/€ is a lot of money and 499 is just madness.
