Technical limitations definitely played a part, but it wasn't only that.

Nintendo went for a specific target market with the wii. That market is not the same as PS3/360 target market. Developers simply made games for the consoles on which they think has the highest selling potential.

With regards to the wii u - i dont think it will have the same problem. The wii u doesnt have the same technical limitations as the wii has. And nintendo seems to be going for the same market as ps3/360.

This doesnt explain the lack of third party support though, where third party developers could have made games specifically for the market of the wii. But not many were willing to do that, for obvious reasons.
