I think people are too quick to use labels: doomed being one of them.
Nobody likes to see a follow up to something do worse, especially if it was the follow up to NDS. But the NDS was one of a kind. Repeating it`s success is really hard if not impossible - even if Nintendo had made everything right.
What concerns me about the 3DS is: can Nintendo do Nintendogs/Brain Training/DS Lite/New Super Mario Bros./Mario Kart all over again?
In terms of hardware the "touch" novelty is gone and the 3D wasn`t the hit it was expected to be. But software is where Nintendo can win again. But, can it make those hits once more?

With Wii U, calling it doomed/coming too late makes no sense when you no nothing about it`s games, 1st party or not, online... overall, it`s strategy.
What i don`t get is that, for some reason, the price comparison between the price of today`s consoles and Wii U`s probable price suddenly becomes a huge deal. People forgot that this happens every generation? The newcomer is always more expensive then the previous console and it still manages to sell.
The way some people talk it´s like no console will make it because Xbox 360 and PS3 have a great library of games and are getting cheaper. You just can`t beat that!

Personally i think 3DS will at least sell the same as GBA. At least!
With Wii U, i think there´s a really good chance of that happening aswell.

Good to see some people use logical thinking as well.  Sad thing most people on this sie doesn't
