People shouldn't be surprised at how the vita is doing. Nowadays the price is such a big factor. When the price cut and software roll in, we will look back at these threads and laugh.

The general assessment that software sells systems is correct. However, for the most part, software from those serieses have been spin-offs or re-releases -- not system sellers.

If Nintendo has locked up new Monster Hunter games, it could be "game over" in Japan, where the Vita is doing the worst (by far).  That would cause the big developers there (which still cast a large shadow over the industry) to ignore the unit.
