I'm not sure about this rumour...
No backward compatibility would be bad. There are a lot of games and remakes this generation. Not supporting that will encourage another round of remakes which I don't think a lot of people would buy. The reason people bought remakes this gen is mostly for trophies. It is important (to many people) not to lose your trophy history.
Going with a faster chipset will increase the price and they have to make sure the rest of the machine supports the chipset. Both price and the ability of the rest of the physical architecture to support the Cell processor were an issue this generation for Sony. Consumers had a hard time justifying the first PS3 prices and once the price became reasonable some devts were still struggling with how to take advantage of the Cell processor.
The used game comments will only be bad if the other console vendors don't do something similar. Also, the online tying to a tag is better as long as this means that unlimited downloads are available. The new protections may deter some gamers from entering the generation, but they will be forced to move as devts start to avoid making new games for the previous consoles.
The article makes no mention of the things I think will be most important next gen which are:
- Are they sticking with blu-ray or going to something else or a new blu-ray standard with even more space?
- Is there going to be internal storage and if so how much and what type (SSD or 3.5" HD, or 2.5" HD)?
- Are they sticking with Move as a casual input device or going with something else?
- What will the network be like in the next generation of Sony consoles?
