Poverty ---> Depression ---> Unhealthy lifestyle

Something like that would be my guess, more or less.

This

Poverty -> depression -> unhealthy lifestyle -> get fat -> depression -> eat more -> get fatter -> more depressed.

It's an endless circle

I would add another component into your cycle, and that is welfare.  Minorities, way disproportionately to their numbers, overwhelmingly use welfare more than Caucasians/Whites.  That contributes heavily to your point about poverty, depression, unhealthy lifestyles, and eating cheaper, high-calorie foods from the frozen section instead of produce from the fresh food section.  Also, it doesn't help that a lot of fast food chains are now allowing you to use food stamps.  Which I think is just horrible.
