One thing... what will this do to current batteries? I don't have a fancy smart phone so my phone battery lasts about 10 days instead of 10 hours... but surely in both cases the best thing for overall battery life is still to let it run down before you charge it (admittedly battery tech is much better now but it's still a good idea to do it for those of us who don't like throwing away a perfectly good phone every year). As such, having something like this at your desk at work for example you would still be better turning it off so your phone doesn't get automatically charged when you don't need it. |
You don't have to worry about that with Lithium ion. It doesn't have the memory affect.
Unless you're phone is ancient, you can also not worry about it.
I've owned phones for years and never had to replace a battery.
Same with portable game devices and PS3 controllers.

Hmm, seems you are right... I thought that was what had screwed my laptop battery up (at only 2 years old I would be lucky to get 30 minutes of non-plugged in time, compared to 4 hours new... whereas now at 3.5 years old I owuld have to turn wireless off and the screen to lowest brightness just to get 10 minutes) turns out it was probably the opposite problem... most of the time using it was spent plugged in, which is apprently not good for Li-ion (you would think laptop manufacturers could figure out an intelligent solution to that, ie have the laptop use some battery charge and stop it charging occasionally)

Mine were the oppisite. Nearly always plugged in so there was no charge/discharge. Most laptops will switch off power to the battery at 100%. Try turn your laptop on without a battery in it but plugged in.
