Common people don't know total lifetime sales (although obviously a huge user base will help keeping a brand name strong even if there is a current sales flection), they know better how popular is a product in the present time, and currently PS3 is the best seller home console and second after 3DS considering portables too, so the PlayStation brand is again one of the strongest in the gaming market. And Sony invested huge resources and bled money for more than three years and a half (they stopped losing money on HW in May-June 2010) to achieve it, it wouldn't make sense to throw it away now.
