Sadly I only have the CD case of a more recent version of Diablo (and Hellfire) because I lost my original one. I think that the Diablo manual also had a bit of lore, but it was mostly about Tristram, Archbishop Lazarus and King Leoric and the war in the Westmarch.

I would Google this but wasn't Hellfire an unreleased expansion of Diablo 1?  I heard about it plenty back in the day but I believe it only existed on the internet as an user made expansion to the original game. 

It was made by Synergistic Software, a division of Sierra On-Line division back then. Blizzard never released an official expansion pack themselves, but they authorized Hellfire as a third party expansion pack. They even released a Diablo+Hellfire bundle back in 1998. 

Hellfire added a new class (the Monk), a couple of new dungeon settings, much more rare items, extra items such as oils, trap runes and new spell pages. Plus they upped Diablo's strength a lot, bastard was tough to beat normally, but with Hellfire, even the Rogue trick was useless. 

I was wondering if it even released in the USA.  I am looking at the wiki page and apparently it did.  I never really saw it in stores ever or bundled in battle chest like they say it was.  I believe it must have been more prevelant in Europe.  If anything it must have barely been on the shelves in USA before pulled.

Mine's a PAL version, even though I was living in south america back in the 90's. I used to come every summer here to Portugal (to visit family) and always bought a shitload of PC games (back where I lived it was impossible to get any decent PC game). 

It's a shame that Hellfire wasn't more divulged than it was, it's really fun and adds much more needed depth to the original Diablo. Plus, it got rid of the damn annoying "Click for every attack" that the original Diablo had and always drove me insane whenever I was playing the Warrior class.
