The racist image sort of came with Nixon's Southern Strategy and with Ronald Regan's indifference towards black people and continued with anti-crime agendas (Willie Horton) in the late 80's.
Then it started again a decade ago with the war against illegal immigration and then all the silly claims over Obama being Muslim or the antichrist.
Prior to FDR, there was no doubt the democrats were as Racist as the GOP. Imo Woodrow Wilson was one of the most racist Presidents in recent times.
Frankly I think Eisenhower was not racist, really started moving on civil rights on the late 50's. Bush jr is actually far more tolerant of illegal immigrantion then most people in his party and even most Americans I would reckon.
