It makes sense, players would get injured less if the goalie played it more as they would not always have to chase down the puck when it is out of the trapazoid area. I thought it was added at the last lockout to encouarge more scoring by giving the offense more chances to keep the puck alive in the offensive zone. I do not think it worked so it does seem a little pointless as a rult to me.
