When i bought my first HD Console ('twas the 360, sold my wii for it, even though i eventually bought a new one), i was pretty stunned by the graphics, but i thought "Well, could be better, i expected Photorealism.
"
Then, when i bought my PS3, dissapointment began, because i expected the System to screw the 360 in graphical capability, but it wouldnt be until a few Years later, when my expectations just dropped, that i was quite impressed by what Sony later offered. (Killzone ! and i still think that Sony didnt necessarily lie with KZ's tech demo back in the Day - though MS kept on improving aswell.)
In terms of Gameplay, i expected the RPGs to be even bigger, and more epic. but it went the other way around, they actually LOST content in exchange for some stupid, shiny graphics. .. another dissapointment.
BUT.. the good thing about this gen is - undeniably - that the overall quality of Games have improved, while 80% of the Games on last-gen consoles were outright trash, most of today's games are actually well done pieces of Software.
Also, Games that i didnt think to impress me much, actually did, (Prime example: Heavy Rain. damn, is this game brilliant. its REALLY underappreciated, and it didnt sell the numbers it deserved!.), so much that i am not only out for RPGs anymore (Even though they are still my favourite kind of game) but for unique experiences in general.
Conclusion: My expectations werent met, but things i didnt expect to impress me, actually blew me away. So i'd say this gen was quite exciting. (even though i'd rank it below the others i've experienced) Cant wait for the next one.
(Not to mention the promising games that are yet to come for this gen!)
