Select isn't being used at all and the start button simply starts or resumes the game (depending on title screen or pause screen activation of the Konami code). See, it's been so long that gamers don't really remember it anymore.

The original konami code, also called the contra code, had start. To select two players, you pressed select. So select start was the 2 player version of the code.
