I love African American People. Which is the term I believe.
Kind of harsh I think. But you are sort of right when you are dealing with some states. The same could probably be said for what we think.

Yeah, Americans call any black person "African American".
Nelson Mandela = African American
David Haye = African American
Idris Elba = African American
To the average American (USA) the rest of the world does not exist or is of no importance.

To make things worse I recommend changing these terms to Sub-Saharan African American or Black Africa African American.
Much more accurate to describe someone who's plainly black with ancestry in Africa.
