Why does any government that claims that people should not be discriminated against based on lifestyle choices define what marriage is at all, or offer particular advantages to those people who fall into their definition of marriage?

What's even worse is that it's not always a matter of lifestyle choices, but that they're born the way they are, which makes this move racist.

Homosexuality is not a race ... There are significant differences between sexuality and race, and trying to make them equivalent is not reasonable.

Beyond that, while I'm fully willing to admit that people are attracted to what they're attracted to with almost no control over it, homosexuality is a lifestlye choice; much like heterosexuality, swinging, bondage, being a playboy, and countless other pursuits. A heterosexual marriage is a very particular kind of lifestyle choice which (for a long time) has received substantial benefits from the government, and the argument is that this is discriminatory against other lifestyle choices. The solution to this problem is not to open up the same benefits to a handful of significantly different lifestyle choices while still discriminating against everyone else.

I guess I used the wrong word for it. My point was though that being gay is not always something you choose, so punishing people who got born in a different way than others would be just like hating on people for being born black or white or whatever.
