Third parties would like to pay no royalty fees and this could work, if the cost savings are given down to consumers who then had to pay $10 less per game on average. It says it plays PC games, so I assume it will be able to play physical media. The 3DO in the '90s followed a similar concept (a hardware standard built by several manufacturers), but it failed because of royalty fees and a lack of good games, because third parties saw no good reason to support the console. This Steambox could work, because it fixes the biggest issues and Valve enjoys consumer trust because of their Steam service on the PC. If they put out an affordable box that plays the majority of third party games for a lower price with proper peripherals and a working online system, then they should be pretty good to go. The biggest question mark is who would come up with the marketing dollars for this idea. |
yup i agree
its a nice idea but i also think the adverage consumer would be compleatly confused by this.
