Everyone who understood Nintendo's strategy for the Wii would have never questioned that Nintendo would be going to abandon the core gamer market.

Think about it:

1. Core gamers buy the most games, they are usually the ones who pick up a system in the first year, they spend the most money on videogames.
2. Core gamers are highly informed about already released and upcoming games and are spreading the word among their friends.
3. Nintendo's business is always run to be highly profitable, it makes no sense to ignore the group of gamers that spends the most money on their hobby.

Nintendo must still fight the perception that they are ignoring the "core gamer" market and that element has never had to be a part of their strategy until now.
