Going to look into the Ubuntu thing Superchunk is talking about though. As for your question, I wouldn't. I like my phones to be small in size and I wouldn't want the Vita to be that small. I actually really like the size of the Vita, especially once I connect the PDP Trigger Grips to it, which is the way I play it.
Thinking about it though, maybe there is a way to make it work. If it slides out it would need to do so by sliding out from the sides, that way once it is pulled out it almost perfect mimics the PSV form factor, although the tracks placed on the back of the device would still kill the chances of keeping the rear touch pad... so I'm still having issue there. Then I run into another problem and that is I wouldn't want a new, updated, more feature rich and spec upgraded version to worry about each year. How long would that take for early adopter to be left with new games that just don't run quite right? I already run into this issue with my phone and I don't have that kind of disposable income. I want to make (1) purchase that is 100% dedicated to my games that won't make me feel like the odd man out 5 years down the road. |
Sort of yeah.
I think it would want to be fully featured but with normal user controls and setups.
So, you could turn on or off all the notification types you already get. You could set other background stuff to be off during game sessions etc... maybe even incoming calls if you wish. But, default would be to have it all on and that shouldn't be a big difference as the 360 and PS3 already do this to varying degrees.
As for your new design... well that is a bit different as phones do come out yearly or sooner. I'd see this device being no different than other handhelds from Sony and Nintendo though. They both have slight design changes every couple years at most. So why not a new PSPhone every two years or so to match growing tech and consumers contracts.
This would make carriers happy and provide continued hardware revenue for Sony since these devices are not loss leaders at point of sale. Additionally, you will need this type of continued growth as phones will continue to grow at a very fast rate as they are simply computers and we know how often that changes.
However, the software will need to remain back and forward compatible as it mostly is now with phone OSs. With incremental changes, I don't think this would ever been an issue. You'd easily get 5-6 years of new software with this approach as per the norm, if you chose to not upgrade to a newer phone for that long, but in reality who does that?
Keep in mind that my idea is that this would be your phone as such there would no difference in people's behaviors.
