His usage of the word is appropriate.

Such as a boiler from excessive pressure of steam. In other words, an explosion is caused by a force from within the object in question.

The opposite, an implosion, is caused by external pressure on the object. The result is an inwards collapse.

This car was shred to pieces. Deal with it.
