It's been confirmed that the Prothean isn't a squad member, they are an unlockable NPC. Still lame but not that big a deal.

Edit: Also man, the BioWare forums are insane. I feel more and more justified in sticking to the strategy forums.

I usually don't go to the Bioware forums, not after DA:O came out and the forums went to shit with PC vs Console wars.
