It's been confirmed that the Prothean isn't a squad member, they are an unlockable NPC. Still lame but not that big a deal.

Where did you read that? On the social bioware forum, michael gamble of Bioware confirmed that it was indeed a squad member: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/9403705/1

Edit: Also man, the BioWare forums are insane. I feel more and more justified in sticking to the strategy forums.
