The original Xbox had Nvidia, the Xbox 360 had AMD, the Xbox 360 had backward compatibility.
Most of the studios that created popular games this generation are still around, making software emulation doable. Granted, it isn't like the Xbox 360 where developers make calls to a hardware independent API, but with the original code, it would be easy for Sony to create a small update to provide software emulation.
That being said, I think Sony will provide backward compatibilty through an add-on piece of hardware. Sony patented such a device a few years ago, but the connectivity for the module didn't match anything on the PS3.
