iPhone wins the price category because you can get it on a contract. Am I missing something here?

Nope, I'm 100% entirely in agreement with you in that being bullshit. A two-year contract just to play games is going to eventually run you back a HELL of a lot more, especially since you're typically going to be virtually forced to add a data plan.

Not typically you have to have a data plan to be able to use the phone. It's kind of annoying but there would be practically no use in a smartphone without one.

Ah, really? Other smartphones don't require a data plan to use (though the phone companies will claim you do). They usually require data to ACTIVATE them (unless you flash 'em with a different ROM), but to USE them, there's no required data plan.

And there's PLENTY use for a smartphone without a data plan. I used one for a year and a half with no data plan and it was more than fine. I basically just couldn't surf the Internet outside of wifi access points. Not really that big a deal. You can still download and install all the apps you want and use Internet-related apps anytime you're near wifi.

Well then T-Mobile is a troll.

If T-Mobile told you that, then they DEFINITELY lied to you, because (1) you can swap out SIM cards at will and the SIM doesn't broadcast what sort of device you're using*, and (2) it was while I was on T-Mobile that I did that. T-Mobile G1. Heck, I still have the device in my bedroom and used to use it as an alarm clock and remote for my blu-ray player for some time after I switched carriers and thus the phone lost all network coverage entirely.

*I say this because with carriers like Verizon, you have to have the device activated by them, so they can actually, in theory, demand that you have a data plan in order to be allowed to use certain devices. T-Mobile and other GSM carriers can't do that, since you can swap out devices at will. The only way you can be required to have a data plan is if the phone refuses to allow you to even use it without a data connection.

I guess my phone then forced me to have a data plan, or it is just the work of T-Mobile over-charging us. (Like usual.) Also T-Mobile told us that we had to have a Data Plan for even a Wi-Fi Connection. (I hardly believed that but my Mom fell for it so, eh.)
