AMD could be a good investment for IBM to enter again the PC CPU market. Intel took great advantage from persuading Compaq to sell it Alpha for a pittance, adapt the incredible Alpha ideas to x86 architecture wasn't immediate and not every idea is adptable to x86 (although AMD itself licensed some Alpha tech before for its first Athlon), the first Core Duo was quite meh, only Core 2 Duo gave Intel back the leadership, but there were projects at various stages of development for new versiona of Alpha up to 2010. Considering how far Alpha was ahead of x86, that would mean Intel has in the drawer good Alpha ideas until 2012 or even later. IBM in its turn could inject PowerPC tech into AMD CPUs and fill the gap, moreover, once Intel runs out of Alpha ideas, it will have to count again only on its own, and AMD, with IBM's help, could surpass it again.
