You have to understand that 3rd parties want to make money and doesnt fall onto them to support the hardware to increase sales. Nintendo did something about the 3DS, Sony has to do something about the Vita themselves. But, this presents issues. First, the company is in a bad financial status and the system is already priced as low as it can be by means of external memory cards. Even if Sony managed to slice the price, it would be unfeasible for them to take the losses of a price cut as substancial as the 3DS got. Therefore, its hard to see the situation improving. From a 3rd party point of view, whose purpose is to survive/make a profit. The 3DS is the logical choice. Furthermore, i think that due to the fact that the 3DS is reaching foreign markets aswell, its a much better venue to port old PSP titles that never sold much in the west due to the PSP's failure.
I'm pretty sure theres good money to be made just porting things like FF7CC, FFtype zero, Kingdom Hearts BBS, FFT, Y's, etc, aswell as Gamecube and Playstation 2 games. The problem with the Vita is 2 fold. One its too soon for it to come out and second it doesnt give you a feature you cant get on any other porable console (3DS has the 3D). Its bad marketing from SONY. Even the rubbing on the VITA system makes little sense when you're blocking the view of your own screen with it. |
Japanese 3rd parties are the only relevant third parties for dedicated handheld gaming. Full stop. Western third parties are eager to move on into the mobile space, whereas they are willing only to give token support to the dedicated handhelds (knockoffs of the big console games)
For the activity to originate in Japanese developers, this should be rather frightening for Sony, if true.
