The martket expanded a lot last handheld gen. Both the DS/PSP brought in new customers. Whether PSP stole the market is debable.

Well the psp did extremely well for Sony's 1st venture into the handheld market against Nintendo's greatest selling handheld. 

smartphones are not dedicated handheld gaming devices so they are not in the same market at all.
