This is true, though it does not yet reflect market realities. There is a strong market still for retail video game titles, one in which it is hard for developers to act independently, and i would argue that it is misconceptions about the retail market that make it seem as though creativity is being stifled therein

The digital market is not quite where the mainstream consumer wants to (or in many cases, is even able to) go just yet, so a place for publishers will remain until physical media is phased out
