this is actually one of the possible solutions to combat piracy.

the people who want the game fund the game, and when it's done it's released free for everyone to share.

everyone will be happy, except the people who hate sharing their stuff with others.

my other solution would be to produce a game and make only one copy that will cost from $ 200.000 to 40 million according to it's budget, and once bill gates or someone else has bought it, the game is free to share.

on topic: i'm going to donate

Except for the fact that Double Fine also needs to make money, not just get enough to be able to get out the game. Or do you think the people work for free?

how would they work for free? what do you think the $ 400.000 are for? people who work on the game get paid for working on the game with that money. hell they even get the money up front. why would they need more money after they don't work on the game any more?

that of course is assuming the 400.000 are calculated in the way that everything and everyone neccesary for the game is being paid for.

Hmm, yeah, you might just be onto something there. I was just thinking that 400k is such a small amount of money, that salaries couldn't possibly be included in there. But they probably are.

It still feels a bit wrong though, that the studio shouldn't get extra moneys and stuff they deserve, so that they won't have to rely on donations for every project from now on. Then again, considering how fast they are making money now, they could safely do so.
