You mean to tell me they can write stories like Saving Private Ryan instead of something like Commando or True Lies. I'll never pretend to be a soldier but I am pretty sure most shooters fall flat on actual battlefield realism. I believe my grandfather (who served in WW2) and my dad (Vietnam) cried like many after watching Saving Private Ryan considering it dealt more into the actual emotions while fighting. I love a good Arnold movie but I can only take so much of bad guys shooting perfectly along side the action hero or the action hero eventually suffering from a grave arm wound.

If you think about it FPS should be one of the most engaging stories yet they usually have shit stories or a general don't really care about it that much.  I think the main problem is the lack of realism but no one would want to play a game where they died probably 99% of time.  Although that would be classic to release a FPS where if you die the game is over.  For games like COD hardcore mode was the only way to play for me considering regular mode was too much bullshit.  I am sorry but I will not play a game mode where it could take almost an entire clip to kill someone while they can turn around if having a more powerful weapon get a few quick shots in and you die.  Play hardcore and even a pistol would drop someone after 2-4 shots.

Also, just wanted to say perhaps the reason why the story doesn't intrigue people as much in FPS as it should is because it is NPC characters that are killing you during single player.  Sure I get pissed if I get killed by a computer opponent but it doesn't piss me off anywhere near getting killed by an actual person.  If they could have people play as the bad guys in the single player campaign then I think that would be awesome if done right.
