Why does the video game industry have the worst writers?

Yeah, very limited talent pool comparatively speaking. In other media such as news paper and culture pages, movies, art you have writers that studied journalism or languages on university level with full motivation to get a lifetime career of writing for people.

Also, there's only so many writers that can be fed and make a living out of gaming journalism. It's a niche market after all and despite some income from web-advertising browsing the internet is free so I imagine revenues aren't that high. Meanwhile the revenue from news papers all over the world must be hundreds of times bigger. Imagine, there's at least one big news paper in every town of 100K population in the world, sometimes even in smaller towns. That revenue allows probably tens of thousands of regular news journalists to make a living in America alone.

That's exactly what I thinking. You explained it much better though. From what I've read, I also think Eurogamer has some quality writers and reviewers. As far as reviews, they're one the few sites that I consistently trust.
