I think the way we're currently handling things like online passes is a bit flawed (nobody likes inputting codes), but I have no problem with the idea of online passes themselves. As for used games, also no problem with those. If people want to buy and sell used games, let them. |
See I can somewhat agree with this view, but what I don't get is Single Player Online Pass (it even sounds like a contradiction.)
Originally it was Mass Effect that had DLC locked, unless you had the pass, but now it is on-disc quest content being locked away. The next evolutionary stage would be to have huge section of the main story locked with a pass.

I'm not familiar with any single player online pass sort of system, can you give an example of a game that uses it and how?
The only thing I can think of is Rage which gives players access to only bonus areas which I was pretty fine with.

It was more in regards to a new game called Kingdom of Amalurs, but I keep hearing different reports if it is on-disc or not.
See my problem with such a system is that most likely in regards to EA practises, that they "intentially" take out something deemed as side quest and attach it to the concept of Online Pass.
Add: Also the reason why I worry even more is, if the next evolutionary step is taking out sections or even an arc before hand. (Which sort of reminds me of Batman's Catwomen DLC)
( Edit, seems like the Mass Effect like DLC...): http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2012/01/kingdoms-of-amalurs-online-pass-continues-a-slippery-slope-for-used-games.ars

Ah, I see.
In the case of Kingdom's of Amalur, I'm guessing they really are just side quests and nothing essential to the game. With Batman, the Catwoman may have been on disc but that doesn't really change the fact that it's purely optional bonus content. If either of those were sold as DLC nobody would be bitching (other than I'm sure people bitching they're charging too much).
Buying used you're still getting the complete game. It's exactly the same as buying a copy of Dead Island and then having to pay to get the new DLC, except that they gave it away as a bonus to people that buy new.
