Often times people do not find a balance. The line between is discipline is very thin; it is not uncommon for parents to blow one minor thing a child does out of proportion, just so they can find an excuse to beat the hell out of them.
Some smacks on the hand or the old rump should be all that occur; smacking a kid in the face is unreal. I have no idea how you could look into the eyes of your own child and literally smack their self-image. I find that explanation FIRST and then spanking later is a better option. When the child is putting themselves in danger then yea, spank em.
