Without have ANY information to back this up, I'm willing to bet that the market for PC gaming in the US is far larger than the market for PC gaming in Germany and probably all of Europe as well.

It's really just an issue of how the software as well as the hardware is distributed. In the US, I'd venture to say that the vast majority of PC games is now DD over retail.

While it's probably because I'm such a big Steam convert that the idea of buying PC games at a retail outlet seems almost quaint, Valve's ever growing margins probably aren't coincidentally tied to the shrinking visability of retail PC games. When EA tries to get on board with Origin, Valve's success with Steam looks a lot less like an anomaly and more like a growing trend in the market.

I'm about 98% sure the US PC game market is larger than Germany's, even if you break it down per capita. The US consumes everything in excess and there is still a strong PC market in the country. There's a reason why the PC gaming market was basically born in the country and is still dominated by it from a developer standpoint.

I know a lot of people who play PC games (though in recent years, I haven't been one of them) and none of them buy retail games any more. Why would they? Steam is fairly priced, you can download a game and be playing it before you even got back from a store, and their selection is great. DD has taken over the PC market by force. Most stores don't even carry a decent selection of boxed PC games anymore.
