Without have ANY information to back this up, I'm willing to bet that the market for PC gaming in the US is far larger than the market for PC gaming in Germany and probably all of Europe as well.
It's really just an issue of how the software as well as the hardware is distributed. In the US, I'd venture to say that the vast majority of PC games is now DD over retail.
While it's probably because I'm such a big Steam convert that the idea of buying PC games at a retail outlet seems almost quaint, Valve's ever growing margins probably aren't coincidentally tied to the shrinking visability of retail PC games. When EA tries to get on board with Origin, Valve's success with Steam looks a lot less like an anomaly and more like a growing trend in the market.
